Collaborations

Quantitative gait analysis only improves horses’ lives when the people using it know what the numbers mean. That is why EGAS works with both specialist veterinary institutions and the companies building gait analysis technology.

Veterinary institutions

We collaborate with veterinary organisations whose members work with equine locomotion every day, and whose training and ours reinforce each other.

ECVSMR

European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR)

ECVSMR is the European specialty college for veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation. Its diplomates and residents treat patients whose recovery depends on understanding how they move — and in the horse, objective gait analysis is central to that work.

Our audiences overlap almost entirely. ECVSMR trains specialists in sports medicine, rehabilitation and return to work; EGAS trains clinicians in measuring and interpreting locomotion. Collaborating lets each organisation point its community towards expertise the other has already built, instead of duplicating it.

In practice that means mutual visibility for both memberships, referral between our educational programmes, and a presence at each other’s events.

Meet us at ECVSMR 2026

7th ECVSMR Scientific Meeting — 8–10 October 2026, ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. Pre-congress workshops take place at the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre in Heesch.

Gait analysis technology providers

A gait analysis system is only as useful as the clinician reading its output. EGAS works with the leading providers of equine gait analysis technology to make sure their users can do exactly that.

The construction is the same with every partner. The company builds, sells and supports the measurement system. EGAS provides the education that turns a system owner into a competent user: the biomechanics behind the measurement, what each parameter does and does not tell you, how to collect data worth interpreting, and how the result fits into a lameness workup.

Our courses are system-independent — we teach the principles that apply to every technology, then how they play out in the one you own. Customers of our technology partners have preferential access to the EGAS Online Academy; your provider can tell you what applies to your system.

These partnerships are non-exclusive. Working with EGAS does not mean EGAS endorses one system over another.

Optical motion capture

Qualisys, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, has built optical motion capture systems for more than 30 years. QHorse applies that technology to equine lameness: marker clusters on the head, withers and pelvis are tracked by arena-mounted cameras, on the straight line and on the circle, producing stride-by-stride three-dimensional asymmetry data alongside synchronised video.

It is the reference standard in equine kinematics and the method much of the clinical validation literature is measured against — which also makes it the most demanding system to set up and interpret well.

Equi-Pro by Inertia Technology

Inertia Technology — Equi-Pro

Wireless inertial sensors

Equi-Pro is built by Inertia Technology in the Netherlands and grew out of the EquiMoves research project. Seven to nine wireless inertial sensors — head, withers, pelvis and the four limbs — record upper body symmetry parameters together with limb-level data such as footfall timing, stride duration, and stance and swing duration per leg.

The sensors go wherever the horse goes: the arena, the track, or the surface you actually want to assess. Limb-mounted sensors also add information that upper body measurements alone cannot give you.

Sleip

Sleip AI

Smartphone video and AI

Sleip turns a smartphone into a gait analysis tool. Video of the horse is processed with AI pose estimation to produce objective asymmetry measures, with no markers or sensors to attach and no fixed installation.

That removes almost every practical barrier to measuring — which makes interpretation matter more, not less. When measurement becomes this easy, the clinical questions shift to what to measure, when to measure it, and what to do with the result.
